  1. An apparatus for collecting gases produced by
  2. the electrolysis of a liquid. It consists of
  3. a vertical E-shaped glass tube with taps at
  4. the upper ends of the outer limbs and a
  5. reservoir at the top of the central limb.
  6. Platinum electrodes fused into the lower ends
  7. of the outer limbs are connected to a source
  8. of direct current. At the beginning of an
  9. experiment, the outer limbs are completely
  10. filled with electrolyte by opening the taps.
  11. The taps are then closed and the current
  12. switched on. Gases evolved at the electrodes
  13. bubble up the outer limbs and collect at the
  14. top, where they can be measured.
